Canucks' Sawyer Mynio shares his feeling after his Team Canada experience
Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio says he was a little shocked after receiving invite to Canada's World Junior summer camp.
Following Tuesday's intra-squad scrimmage, where he picked up a goal and an assist, Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio spoke with TSN's Mark Masters and said that this is his first-ever Hockey Canada camp and he was a little shocked to get the call to join the team in Windsor, but believes he earned it after a strong 2023-24 season.
"It was awesome. First Hockey Canada camp for me ever, so to perform that well like I did, it gives me confidence going into this." Mynio said.
When asked what it was like getting the call to camp, Mynio added, "It was awesome, I was a little shocked but I think I earned it. Last year, I had a really good year, so yeah, I'm excited."
When asked about what contributed to his successful 2023-24 campaign with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, Mynio explained the opportunities he was given by the team's coaching staff, while praising the players he went to battle with on a nightly basis.
"I think just opportunity and work. I was on the powerplay, I was on the the penalty kill, I had great players to play with and I just worked my hardest at it."
Team Canada head coach Dave Cameron said that he liked Mynio's game overall during the intra-squad scrimmage and thought that we was very well rounded. Cameron added that they were talking about wanting to be a team that gets pucks to the net at the World Juniors this year and he did exactly that on his goal on Tuesday.
"I liked his game overall. We talked about wanting to be a team that gets pucks to the net and I think his goal was just that. It was a pass back to the point and he just got it to the net and we had a screen in front and he got rewarded for that too. So, then he picked up an assist too, I think he had two points tonight. I liked his game, not just in the fact that he had two points, but from the fact that it was pretty well rounded." Cameron said.
Hockey Canada is currently in the middle of their World Junior Summer Showcase camp and with a pair of games under their belt, including the intra-squad scrimmage and a shootout loss to Sweden on Wednesday, they're looking forward towards tomorrow's tilt with Finland before things wrap up on Saturday against the United States.
