It's been an interesting week to say the least when it comes to updates on Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko and a new report has come out on Friday that isn't positive news for the organization.
In an article on The Athletic, Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal shared an update on Thatcher Demko after speaking with sources around the league that are in the loop regarding the Canucks goaltender's situation.
Drane and Dhaliwal are reporting that sources tell them Thatcher Demko won't be ready for training camp and pre-season games next month and that his availability for their opening game of the 2024-25 season against the Calgary Flames is in question.
In 2023-24, the San Diego native had the best year of his career in the National Hockey League so far, setting single-season highs in wins, shutouts, goals against average and save percentage. In 51 games, Demko had a record of 34-14-2 along with a 2.45 goals against average, a .918 save percentage and five shutouts.
Due to Demko's injury issues, the Canucks have reportedly begun looking at the goaltending market to see what their options are heading into the new season, with Kevin Lankinen being named as a potential free agent signing for Patrik Allvin.
It's certainly going to be interesting to see how Thatcher Demko is heading into the month of September and if he's able to get back up to speed and feel 100 percent healthy by opening night. If not, the starting reigns will likely be passed to Arturs Silovs, at least to start the season, much like what happened during the Stanley Cup Playoffs back in the spring.
