The Canucks' GM, Patrik Allvin, will be extremely busy negotiating contracts in the upcoming weeks and perhaps even months.

Many Canucks' veterans are headed to free agency, and Allvin will have to determine who he wishes to keep around and how he plans on filling those empty roster spots. One player who the Canucks would love to bring back and who's about to hit free agency is the beloved warrior Chris Tanev.

The Canucks were very much involved in the derby to acquire his services at the trade deadline, but they fell short to the Stars, who had the upper hand. Since day one, we've known Allvin and his management were interested in returning him, especially after Quinn Hughes sang his praises.

With the season-ending loss on Monday, it appears that the Canucks have already started their internal discussions as to how they want to play things out this summer. According to Rick Dhaliwal's sources, the Canucks tend to believe that Tanev is going to be a little out of their price range:

Dhaliwal: Internally Canucks right now believe Tanev is going to be too expensive.

Right now, the Canucks only have two defensemen from their top six signed through next season, Carson Soucy and Quinn Hughes. Filip Hronek, a restricted free agent, Ian Cole, Tyler Myers and Nikita Zadorov are unrestricted free agents at liberty to test the market. It'll be intriguing to see how Allvin manages his roster from there, but Tocchet could be dealing with a new defensive corps next season.

For the time being, Tanev is still in the middle of a Stanley Cup-chasing journey with the Dallas Stars. They are set to play game one of the Conference Finals on Thursday.
