Vancouver Canucks see significant jump in recent NHL franchise valuation
The Vancouver Canucks have seen a significant jump in their recent NHL franchise valuation released by Sportico on Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, Sportico released their franchise valuations for all 32 National Hockey League teams in 2024. To calculate these valuations and to ensure they're fair and as accurate as possible, Sportico take a look at a number of factors including team revenue by seeking public records and interviewing those in the business including lawyers. They also looked at team-related business and real estate holdings to gage the value of the owner's equity.
"To derive the fair market value of the 32 NHL franchises, Sportico calculated each team's revenue, relying on publicly available information and financial records-as well as interviews with those knowledgeable of team finances, including eight sports bankers and lawyers who actively work on NHL transactions. In the interest of accuracy, we traded candor for anonymity. This information was vetted with multiple team owners, team financial and operating officers, media relations personnel and former team executives, as well as industry experts and sports-focused economists." Sportico said.
Vancouver Canucks see big increase in their valuation
The Vancouver Canucks have seen a pretty sizable increase when compared to Sportico's 2023 list. While the Canucks remain in 12th on Sportico's list, they saw an increase of 44% to their franchise value and now sit at $1.73 billion USD. Last year, the Canucks were valued at $1.2 billion USD.
If the trend continues and the Vancouver Canucks are able to make another $500+ million jump in 2025, that'll take them over the $2 billion USD mark, which would be great for the franchise and the National Hockey League as a whole. The person who would benefit the most from this is owner Francesco Aquilini, who bought the Canucks for $250 million USD in two separate transactions, the first 50% in 2004 and the remaining share in 2006.
All 32 teams now valued at over $1 billion USD
There's some big news for the National Hockey League as a whole on Sportico's list. For starters, the average value of a National Hockey League franchise jumped to $1.79 billion USD.
Last season, ten teams were under the $1 billion USD mark, but now, there are no teams below that, with the Columbus Blue Jackets coming in at 32nd with a valuation of $1.06 billion USD.
From a revenue standpoint, the National Hockey League continues to grow and there's no doubt that once Sportico's list for 2025 comes out, we'll see the average franchise valued at $2 billion USD.
