Canucks Set to Trade for Will Borgen? The Move That Shakes Up Vancouver's Blue Line
Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson were out of the the lineup due to their respective injuries and the Vancouver Canucks lost once again, this time to the Calgary Flames on New Years Eve night, which officially has them drop out of a playoff spot.
The need for a trade is now, but the option of acquiring Will Borgen from the New York Rangers may not be the answer to the Canucks woes.
Is New York Rangers defenseman Will Borgen the right fit for the Vancouver Canucks?
Just Last week, NHL Insider and reporter for the Athletic Chris Johnston reported that the Vancouver Canucks are interested in outbidding other NHL clubs to acquire New York Rangers defenseman Will Borgen.
"The Canucks have struggled since losing Filip Hronek to a significant lower-body injury earlier this month, and they're not expecting him to play again before February.
That's exposed a gaping need on the right side of the blue line that management has aggressively been trying to address," Johnston said.
"Enter Borgen, who excels in the less-celebrated parts of the game like penalty killing, which Vancouver can certainly use. As Johnston noted, Will Borgen excels better than most at the areas of the game that do not show up on highlight tapes but make all the same impact on wins and losses.
Especially with the injuries to Hughes and Hronek, the Canucks are in turmoil on the back end, and Borgen can easily step in to play on the second pairing, or even on the top line.
It must be clear that Borgen is not a replacement nor upgrade for Hronek, but bridges the gap between the top pairing and the bottom pairings that get switched out every other game.
As long as the price is right, the Canucks need to go after Borgen now before it is too late.
