Leave it to the ever classy Boston Bruins organization to sign someone the pedigree of Mitchell Miller to an entry level deal with maximum signing bonuses & other bonus clauses.
If you're not familiar, Miller was accused of bullying & various forms of harassment in his mid teens when he & another person or persons caused havoc for a developmentally challenged classmate through physical bullying & even convincing the victim to eat a candy Miller had dipped into a urinal.
The victim also happened to be a person of colour, so the young black man was also potentially the victim of a race related hate crime.
Look, I'm not gonna soapbox here, I shouldn't have to.
This guy should not be rewarded this immediately for that behaviour, 14 years old or not, with a pro sports career. It's not 'how it's supposed to go'.
It's also always argued that 'these guys are mature at a younger age from competing & being in the locker room'. I don't have children of my own, I do have a step child. I can feel a different part of me boil just to read the details of this story.
Sean Gentille from The Athletic took the Bruins' signing to task & I felt it was worth the read.
I also have a resume in my life of events or actions I'm not proud of. Second chances are what life is often built on, so I don't want to just grab a pitchfork & get to it.
The way I see it, knowing how long it took my life to start flying proper, it's as simple as this. Karma still has yet to bring his account to $0.00. Until now, maybe.
It seems commissioner Gary Bettman has other plans as it relates to Miller suiting up inside the NHL's rinks. Aaron Portzline, also of The Athletic, tweeted the Bettman quote in its entirety.
So what does Gary Bettman announcing that Miller will not be eligible to compete in the NHL mean? This is unprecedented & we had to share this with our FanBase, being a cultural hub in Vancouver, a city that proudly preached equality.
The question will remain...Can he repair that reputation, or repent his behaviour & the short answer is sure he can, and maybe he will. But for now, it won't happen in Bruins Black & Yellow.
