Brock Boeser, Tyler Myers and Conor Garland were big names the Canucks had openly tried to move since they take big chunks of the Canucks cap space. Even if some thought it was impossible, J.T. Miller has gathered interest even if his $56M deal is about to kick in.
Matt Vensel, covering the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Post Gazette, confirmed there had been talks with the Canucks' management for the winger. Hextall also added Friday that he would only pay premium price for a player with term.
The salary cap being the problem to every trade involving big assets may be resolving itself since the Penguins have recently waived two players carrying sizeable AAV. Kasperi Kapanen was notably claimed by the Blues and today they've sent Brock McGinn down the waiver wire. Kapanen accounted for a $3.2M AAV, while McGinn accounts for $2.75M. Which makes more than enough room to take Miller's cap hit which is $5.25M until the end of the season. Jason Zucker's contract is expiring and would therefore leave enough room for Miller's next deal to come in.
Now, it may be a matter of circumstances but Shayna Goldman realeased the following tweet this morning:
For the Pens to acquire a player in the likes of J.T. Miller would certainly go a long way since their core is aging but still very capable.
If the Canucks were to follow along with their plans, is moving J.T. Miller the way to go? Could they fetch a decent return with this trade?
