Hockey is a physical sport and we love it for that when it's clean and no one intends to injure anyone on purpose.
Tonight the New York Rangers are hosting the Ottawa Senators. While the Rangers were up 1-0 in the 1st, Senators' forward Austin Watson launched a questionable hit on his former teammate Tyler Motte.
Here's the sequence:
The referees showed no mercy toward Watson, who was given a five minute major and game misconduct. Watson will most certainly be punished by the NHL Department of Player Safety, as this was clearly an attempt to injure. These kind of plays are exactly what this league doesn't need.
Watson is a hard nose player that can usually play the game on the edge, but tonight he definitely crossed it.
As for Tyler Motte, it was later shared that he wouldn't be back for the remainder of the game:
"Rangers F Tyler Motte has an upper-body injury and will not return tonight."
