The Canucks are set to take on the New York Rangers in Vancouver tonight. They are looking to rebound after two embarrassing losses to the Detroit Red Wings, including a 6-1 thrash Monday night.
After that loss, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet was very critical of his team saying:
"They are gonna have to go back to grade school to learn how to play defense."
Tocchet stuck to that, treating the Canucks like a bunch of 8-year-olds learning the basics of defense, in Tuesday morning's practice.
Tocchet is as old school as they come when it comes to coaching. He wants his team to play that hard noised defensive style, the kind Tocchet used to play during his time in the NHL. He used the good old fashion teaching methods, the ones used by coaches developing the younger players.
Canucks forward Curtis Lazar would comment after practice saying:
"We're building, we're growing. It's all about understanding what we need to do, to prepare for the next game."
It will be determined if Tocchet's approach to going back to basics helps the Canucks, or if could he needs a different way of doing things. The Canucks problems obviously won't be fixed overnight, but if they can improve throughout the remainder of this season will be a big help to give the Canucks a shot of being a playoff team hopefully next season.
