Newly-retired defenceman Alexander Edler is reportedly wanting to return to the Vancouver Canucks in an off-ice role.

Last night prior to their game against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Vancouver Canucks paid tribute to one of the best defecemen in franchise history, Alexander Edler as he signed a one-day contract to retire with the team. Edler also joined the team on the ice in his full gear, one last time, participating in the ceremonial puck drop.

Among the ways they honoured the former defenceman was by gifting him an original eagle carving, which was done by Gitxsan First Nation artist, Trevor Angus.

When speaking with reporters on Friday, Alexander Edler said that he would be interested in returning to the organization in a coaching role, similar to what Daniel and Henrik Sedin have. The Sedins took on a development coaching role prior to the 2022-23 season, but are expected to play a bigger role with the club this season.

"It is for sure," Edler said. "I'm trying to figure out what's next, what I want to do. Being able to work with some of those guys, that would be great but we'll see. We'll see when I'm ready to try something and what it is, I'm not sure yet."

He added, "I see myself doing something in hockey for sure that's where my knowledge is at."

Edler was also asked about the Sedin twins and what they meant to his career after he came over to North America ahead of the 2006-07 season. The 38-year-old expressed gratitude towards the Sedins and said that they took him under their wing.

"Anyone who has played on the same team as them would consider themselves lucky." Edler said.

He added, "From day one, they took me under their wings and I've gotten to know them very well and we're close friends. Just to have those two as your friends on and off the ice, they set a standard here for many years, a very high standard."

Edler, a native of Ostersund, Sweden, appeared in 925 games during his time with the Vancouver Canucks, registering 409 points (99 goals, 310 assists), 665 penalty minutes and was a minus-36.

The Vancouver Canucks and their prospects would be pretty lucky if Alexander Edler was to return as a development coach. He would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that would be very valuable to the younger players, especially defencemen, who are trying to take the next step in their respective careers.
