While a supposed trade between the Canucks and Hurricanes for Elias Pettersson never materialized, Vancouver appears still to have interest in the rumoured centrepiece of the deal.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman said while it certainly won't be Pettersson going back the other way, he believes the Canucks would still like to look into acquiring Martin Necas.

The Nečas one is big I think there's something to Vancouver. I think the Canucks like the player, I don't believe they are the only ones.

The 25-year-old forward scored 53 points in 77 games after putting up 71 points the season prior, and he also added 9 points in 11 playoff games for Carolina.

He's a skilled offensive player with upside, but his time in Carolina appears to be coming to an end. Even his own father has added to the speculation that he's unhappy with the Canes.

Friedman suggested that with the Hurricanes expected to lose several defencemen to free agency this summer, Filip Hronek might be a good fit.

Hronek was a revelation at the start of the season and showed great chemistry with Quinn Hughes, but his play dipped down the stretch and even further in the playoffs.

While the deal would open a big hole on the blue line, the Canucks could add another young offensive dynamo if it took place.
