Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks were pretty busy on the first day of free agency as they looked to replace some of the players they lost, including Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov. Still, one insider doesn't believe they did enough.
While a guest on Sekeres and Price on Thursday, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff gave the Canucks a C+ grade for their off-season moves, saying that he doesn't know how you could make the argument that they're a better team now than they were during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
While losing Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov may hurt, Patrik Allvin did a pretty solid job replacing them. The Canucks went out and signed Jake DeBrusk, who will play an essential role in the top six, as well as forwards Danton Heinen and Kieffer Sherwood, who essentially replace Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty.
On the blueline, Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais will try their best to fill the the roles Nikita Zadorov and Ian Cole held last season. The Canucks also made a change in between the pipes by not bringing back Casey DeSmith and will likely use either Arturs Silovs or Jiri Patera, who they signed last week, as the backup to Thatcher Demko.
It's hard to understand why Seravalli is giving the Canucks such a low grade. As mentioned, losing Zadorov and Lindholm will surely hurt. Still, you could make the argument that the Vancouver Canucks roster got a lot deeperrofound with the additions of Heinen and Sherwood in particular, while adding a top-six forward in Jake DeBrusk, that they were one of their top priorities when the free agent market opened on Canada Day.
