Patrik Allvin opens up on his intentions for Elias Lindholm before he left
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin says he wanted to re-sign Elias Lindholm before he hit the open market on July 1st.
The Vancouver Canucks' roster will look a bit different next season with the amount of additions made by Patrik Allvin earlier this summer. The team lost Elias Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov and Ian Cole, among others, to free agency on July 1st and Allvin did a pretty solid job in replacing them by signing Jake DeBrusk, Vincent Desharnais, Derek Forbort, along with some depth pieces including Danton Heinen and Daniel Sprong.
Losing guys like Lindholm, Zadorov and Cole is never easy and Allvin had a tough task trying to replace them, but everyone is fairly confident that the players he brought in for 2024-25 will be great additions and work hard towards the team's ultimate goal - winning the Stanley Cup.
In a recent interview with Swedish media outlet HockeySverige, Patrik Allvin said that he wanted to keep Elias Lindholm around before he hit the open market, but was unable to because the cost was too high for the Canucks.
Note: the quotes in this story are translated from Swedish.
"Definitely and something we tried. Unfortunately, in the end we could not afford to keep Elias. I wish him the best of luck in Boston. He played really well for us during his time here." Allvin said.
He went on to add, "What Elias meant to us was that we became stronger in the center positions. He played incredibly important "match-up" roles during the playoffs. He took on the opposition's better players.
In addition, he is a good scorer and good in box play, so he meant a lot to us."
The 29-year-old Lindholm left the Canucks on the opening day of free agency, landing a massive seven-year contract worth $54.24 million ($7.75 million AAV) with the Boston Bruins where he's joined by former teammate in Vancouver - Nikita Zadorov.
Lindholm will be remembered by the fans in Vancouver for what he was able to do in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and his strong play at the most important time of the year, putting up ten points in 13 games, helping the Canucks reach the second round.
