The Ottawa Senators have made an official statement this morning regarding their assistant coach's health.

The team announced that the assistant to DJ Smith, Bob Jones had been diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as the Lou Gherig disease.

Bob and his family have made a special request on the matter:

"As Bob shares his diagnosis publicly, one of the Jones' family's goals is to help raise awareness for ALS research. The family has asked that those considering contributions consider both the ALS Society of Canada and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation"

The entire Hockey community is extremely saddened by the news. Jones is only 53, he's currently in his fourth season behind the Sens' bench.

At this point, Bob has requested to remain in position, the organization has stated that they've given him their full support to fully concentrate on his health and his family:

"We have been working internally with Bob and his family as he takes on this challenge; while Bob will continue with his coaching duties, he has the full support of the organization to take any time he needs away from the club during the season to concentrate on his health and his family."

We send our best wishes and prayers to Bob and his family as they go through this challenge.
