During the 2022/23 NHL season there have been 58 penalties the Canucks have had to defend against. They've allowed 21 goals on the penalty kill out of those 58 opportunities. That's a penalty kill percentage of 63.8%. Last year they almost set the league-worst NHL penalty killing record of all-time. Set by the 1979-80 Los Angeles Kings roster with an abysmal 68.2% penalty killing to finish their season. If the Canucks keep it on pace they will break that record in history.
Can the Canucks get out of this bind and start killing off penalties? Does the problem lie in Thatcher Demko's playing? Or does Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat and J.T. Miller need even more ice time?
