Do we have ourselves a Goalie controversy in VanCity?!
Last night the Vancouver Canucks fell to 2-6-2 after 10 games & don't look now, but there are several elephants in a very small room.
I'm not talking the Halloween Costume type either, although if you're curious it was a job well done by Brock Boeser & Thatcher Demko this year, with spot on recreations of Tin-Man & Dorothy. Their S/O's took care of Lion & Scarecrow, with Thatcher's wife Lexi posting this to her Instagram this past weekend.
Saturday night was Wonderland, a big weight off the shoulders beating the perennial top shelf Penguins the night before, stringing together back to back wins complete with Sid & Gino in the lineup.
That's over now.
Instead, the largest of the proverbial herd packed into tight quarters is the drop off in play from Thatcher Demko.
He has all but lost the identity that took him from young prospect to bonafide (according to Elliot Friedman) Vezina Candidate. With a less than stellar .874 GAA, good enough for 51st among NHL 'tenders, he has yet to steal a game for his team. It can be argued he's instead been part of this team's inability to hold a lead, case in point the first 4 games of the 82 game schedule.
After last night, he wasn't about to get into what might be ailing him either, opting for the quick exit method post-game.
On the contrary, the 12 points in 8 all time starts hot streak for backup Spencer Martin including earning a point in every appearance seems like a no brainer to ride, if only for a few games.
Problem there is, he has never been an NHL starter, plus you have the law of averages screaming for a come back down to earth after the scorching start to this man's career on the Coast.
No matter who gets the start, it'll take heart, brains & a yellow brick road to get this team out of the basement & back into contention.
Safe to say Demko is now realizing, 'we're not in the bubble anymore'...
