LATEST | Damon Severson reveals if he would've had considered the Canucks
After his sign-and-trade with the New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets, Damon Severson joined Donnie & Dhali and was asked if he would have considered signing with the Vancouver Canucks if he hit unrestricted free agency on July 1st.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. I for sure would have loved to be a lot closer to home. Being a guy who played for the Rockets, spends his summers in Kelowna now with some of the guys who have been through that program with the Rockets and then through the Canucks. Myers, Schenn, those kind of guys, they seem to enjoy playing for the Canucks and I'd be lying, like I said, if I wasn't interested in going out there and being closer to home, making it easier on friends and family." Severson said.
He added, "But, obviously with their salary cap and everything too, they've got some stuff to figure out and I wasn't going to sit around and wait for a team to try and grab me. It was very impressive for Columbus to be aggressive in their push. Like I said, Vancouver is definitely a higher team on my list of destinations, but not everything works out perfectly, so now I get a chance to be a visitor in that building and have a lot of friends and family come and watch me there now once a year."
He added, "But, obviously with their salary cap and everything too, they've got some stuff to figure out and I wasn't going to sit around and wait for a team to try and grab me. The 28-year-old's contract is for eight-years at $6.25 million per season, along with a no-trade clause for the first four years and a modified no-trade clause for the final four years. To acquire Severson, the Blue Jackets needed to give up a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
While it would have been nice to add Damon Severson to the roster for next season and beyond, there was no way that Allvin and the Canucks would have been able to afford that contract, even if they did move out salary. It would have made it difficult to make additional moves this summer to address other areas of need.
