Just over one year to the day the Canucks dealt Bo Horvat, the team found itself on the other side of a very similar deal, trading 5 pieces to the Flames for Elias Lindholm including a 1st round pick.

On the Jeff Marek show, Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said last year's Horvat deal acted as a template to build from for the Lindholm trade.

He [Craig Conroy] gave Patrik a structure of what he thought a deal should look like, he suggested it should look similar to a Horvat deal from a year ago, and that's what they started working off of,
Rutherford said.

While he said they're different players, Rutherford acknowledged that Lindholm checks a lot of the boxes Bo Horvat did as an elite top six centre who can play in all situations.

The Canucks got a better draft pick in the Horvat deal than they'll expect to give up for Lindholm, but arguably gave up a better prospect and roster player in Brzustewicz and Kuzmenko than they got for their former captain.

Whether he perfectly fills the hole left by Horvat or not, Lindholm greatly bolsters the Canucks forward group and gives them plenty of options up front.
