LATEST | Analyst points out the one thing the Canucks need to sign Elias Pettersson long-term: It may be a concern
Elias Pettersson had a breakout season in 2022-2023. The centerman carried the team through the season as his point production went up from 66 to 102 points.
The superstar enters the last year of his deal which will make him a restricted free agent by the end of the season. Pettersson set himself up to sign the heftiest contract in Canucks' history. However, a concern recently arose since it was pointed out that it wasn't all about money for EP40.
A highly competitive athlete, Pettersson has pointed out in the past that he planned on winning. The staff on Sportsnet650 discussed the subject earlier and brought up an excellent point:
''If you want a really competitive guy like Elias Pettersson to sign long term, you gotta show him that you're capable of supporting him and putting him in a position to succeed''
Signing the Swede to a long-term contract goes a long way for this 'retool'. It became clear that the franchise identified Pettey as their offensive cornerstone and the next months are going to be extremely important for this franchise going forward.
