There's obviously been contractual conflict between the Canucks and Elias Pettersson in their extension talks. Pettersson stated he'd be taking a step back from those talks before the season to see how the team would wind up doing.

Now that they've shown their colours, there still hasn't been any concluant development and an insider just revealed the reason for it. It was revealed earlier this week that the Canucks would be ready to pretty much give up as much money as Pettersson would like, but the two parties can't agree on the contract's term. Pettersson wants a shorter term deal, possibly looking for an out with three or maybe four years at max. While the Canucks are definitely looking for max term at eight:

"Two teams are chomping at the bit to get the deals done...in Pettersson's case, it's been a grapple over term. In Nylander's case, I think part of him wonders 'is Toronto going to be the place?"

PETTERSSON IN FULL CONTROL?

The way this situation is trending, Pettersson has the full control over the Canucks right now and we're trending towards a situation looking more and more like Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs. The American Superstar ended up signing an enormous contract with a wild $13.25M cap hit over the next four seasons.

The one positive out of this scenario is that the Canucks will most likely be looking at a lower AAV if the term ends up being lower. However, it also means the Swede could skip town way sooner and that might mean a shorter window of contention for the Canucks.
