LATEST | Plan reportedly in motion to bring an NHL team to a new location
Whether it comes through relocation or expansion, it appears that Salt Lake City is a top destination for the National Hockey League and according to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, the wheels are in motion to get a team.
Last month, Smith replied to a tweet saying that he needs to bring a National Hockey League franchise to Utah and Salt Lake City by saying 'in motion'.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman discussed the topic on his '32 Thoughts' podcast earlier this week and he believes that Salt Lake City could be on the NHL's radar down the line as they're expected to get a new arena if their bid is successful for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics.
"We reported about Ryan Smith, the owner of the Jazz, and I do believe Salt Lake City is interested in an NHL team somewhere down the road and they're expected to get a new rink should the win the Olympics in 2030 or more likely 2034.." Friedman said.
But now with the news that the Arizona Coyotes are likely to be on the move, could Smith get the NHL franchise he's desiring? It's certainly possible and they could play out of the 20,000-seat Vivint Arena, which Ryan Smith also owns.
TSN's Darren Dreger also wondered if Salt Lake City now becomes a relocation option rather than waiting for an expansion franchise.
"2) Utah Jazz owner, Ryan Smith has publicly expressed interest in an NHL team. Could Salt Lake City become a relocation target? Relocation fees are significant. This would leave Houston/Atlanta as potential expansion areas down the road much larger expansion dollars. Options" Dreger said.
The NHL has held pre-season games in Salt Lake City every year since 2018, except 2020, and will be returning there again in October when the Los Angeles Kings take on the San Jose Sharks.
